Arthur Lewis

A Nobel prize-winning economist who argued in the 1950s that development happens when workers move from "subsistence" activities—informal enterprises and tiny farms—to a more productive "capitalist" sector of factories and commercial farms. His framework of structural transformation remains central to the debate over African development policy.
