He was appointed chief executive just over a decade ago, at a time when Walmart's same-store sales were in decline and profits were cratering under pressure from Amazon. He has reinvigorated the company by reinvesting profits into new technologies and e-commerce while using its bricks-and-mortar infrastructure to compete with Amazon.
