Mr Cardinale bristles when his firm is compared to conventional private equity; at a time when private giants are writing bigger cheques, he wants to show that smaller specialist funds can reshape whole industries. He hopes to build RedBird's investments into a few big publicly traded businesses that can become sources of capital for the leagues, teams and studios of the future—in his words, "the new Walt Disney".
